Tycho Brahe Planetarium’s ‘Made In Space’

59 Productions engaged me as one of 3 animators to create animations for the new permanent installation in Copenhagen’s Tycho Brahe Planetarium. It was an extraordinary job. I was tasked with creating visual depictions of impossible-to-see quarks and electrons, as well as animating the formation of the Universe we see today. No mean feat! The result plays on a loop across 5 massive screens, as well as various 4K TVs.

‘Songs of Abdulkareem Abdulqader’

And so to Kuwait City’s new Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre for a projection-laden celebration of Kuwaiti songwriting hero Abdulkareem Abdulqader. Below are some stills from my sequences from the show.

‘Life of Galileo’

59 engaged me to work as lead animator for Joe Wright’s production of Brecht’s ‘Life of Galileo’ at the Young Vic. It was a spectacular show all round, with superb performances from the cast and excellent (and loud) music by The Chemical Brothers’ Tom Rownlands. A giant 13 metre dome spanned the ceiling – upon which were projected various epic space sequences.

It was a considerable challenge creating these sequences, particularly in the freeflowing to-and-fro of theatre, but we pulled it off (to judge by the reviews). Unfortunately, I’m not allowed to show the epic final sequence, so here is a simpler one (alas also without the music).

59 Production’s ‘City of Glass’

Long time client 59 Productions embarked on their enormously ambitious stage adaptation of Paul Auster’s New York Trilogy. It opened in Manchester and then moved to London, where it was greeted by rave reviews.

I was one of four lead animators on the show. There is animated content for every second of the 105 minute production, so it was a big undertaking! See some of ‘my’ bits here, mapped onto a 3D model of the set to give a sense of how it is in the space:

Copenhagen Kulturnat 2016

Copenhagen’s No Parking asked me to create animations for part of their city-wide light installation. My animation (a snippet of which can be seen below) was projected across the exterior ceiling of Nørreport station throughout the night.

BBC Proms – Cello

BBC_Proms-Still_2

59 Productions’ Richard Slaney engaged me to create the animations for their collaboration with BBC Proms. The project involved projecting onto a moving cello whilst cellist Sol Gabetta played a bit from Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor.  Here is a ‘raw’ clip from the animation I produced.

The final product can be seen here:

‘Shaken Mirror’

59 Productions engaged me to work as senior animator on Kim Brandstrup’s spellbinding and nerve-jangling ballet based on the poetry of Søren Ulrik Thomsen. The ballet ran in May and June 2016 at Copenhagen’s Skuespillehuset.

The projections were principally about creating a shifting and uncertain sense of place using light and shadows. I built an array of interiors and exteriors that were then projected onto the beautifully stark set. Here is one example of the interiors.

‘Impossible’

Lysander Ashton at 59 Productions engaged me to produce animations for ‘Impossible’, a magic show that guides the viewer through centuries of tricks.

The show is touring the UK and elsewhere through 2016.

‘David Bowie Is’

At 59 Production’s behest, I created some of the audiovisual content for the original exhibition back in 2012, notably the three videos in the exhibition’s final room, for ‘Jean Genie’, ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide’ and ‘Sweet Thing’. The exhibition has since toured to the AGO in Toronto, MIS in Sao Paolo, the Martin Gropius Bau Berlin, the MCA Chicago, the Philharmonie de Paris, and the ACMI Melbourne. The exhibition in Groningen runs through the April 2016, then on to Bologna, Barcelona and New York.

At each venue, the final room is redesigned, as are the videos. The video above is a mock-up of the four giant screens in the space, to give a sense of the immersive nature of the experience.

Damon Albarn’s ‘Wonder.land’

59 Productions’ Lysander Ashton engaged me as co-Animation Director, with Zsolt Baloch, to produce animations for The National Theatre’s ‘Wonder.land’. It’s a sumptuous production, created with the combined talents of Damon Albarn (music), Moira Buffini (script) and Rufus Norris (direction).

The video above of the computer game sequence is currently without Damon Albarn’s music due to the fiddly world of permissions. Below are three of the backdrops used for the action in ‘Wonder.land’.

It first opened as part of the Manchester Festival in July 2015 and moved to the National Theatre in London in November. It runs through to April 2016.
